Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What’s with the ads? I’m somebody who uses free services, then complains about ads.
A: Placeholder.com serves over a billion images per month & it’s free to use. We used to have sponsorship from a famous image CDN, but we don’t anymore.

The problem? The free service still costs $1,000s and $1,000s a year to run. Hence: ads. Did we mention it’s 100% free?

Q: What’s with this “Powered by HTML.com” nonsense in my placeholder images?
A: HTML.com is one of our sister sites. The “powered by” branding is a test. We may or may not keep it. Hate it? You can specify your own text instead by using a query string at the very end of the URL:-

Q: Can I use Placeholder.com images on my production server serving 1m+ page views per month?
A: No. Please don’t 🙁

Q: But what if I do, anyway? How you going to stop me?
A: We’ll reluctantly 404 the images – like we did with a very famous Australian newspaper who used our images on their classified ad platform without warning.

Q: Can you add HTTPS support, please? It’s 2018…
A: At the request of a patient user, we have added HTTPS support. You can now call Placeholder.com images with HTTP or HTTPs.

Q: Why don’t you add other placeholders – y’know, like lorem ipsum text?
A: Your wish is our command. Here’s the lorem ipsum you requested. See also: ASDF, etaoin shrdlu, li europan lingues, “now is the time” and “the quick brown fox”.

Q: What happened to Placeholders.org? How did I end up here?

A: We acquired the domain of sworn-rivals Placeholders.org in October 2018. Your images should still work – if not, please let us know.

Q: How can I support Placeholders.com?
A: Blog about it, tweet about it & shout it from the rooftops.
